Latifa Akay

Latifa is project manager at Maslaha. She holds an LLM in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice from SOAS University and an LLB in Law with Politics from Queen’s University, Belfast.

A passionate women's rights advocate, Latifa has been involved with prominent women's groups in both the UK and Turkey, including the Women Living Under Muslim Laws network, Feminijtihad and the Istanbul-based collective Women for Women's Human Rights - New Ways. She is using her experience and knowledge of gender issues and feminism in the context of Islam to expand Maslaha's 'I Can Be She' project.

Latifa previously worked as a correspondent for Turkey’s leading English daily, Today’s Zaman and her articles have been published in, among others, The Guardian and The Scotsman newspapers.

She recently conducted research for the Irish Human Rights Centre exploring the notion of 'faith in democracy' in the context of Turkey and was selected as one of ten European candidates for the Critical Endeavour arts writing program curated by Jardin d’Europe in Vienna in 2012.

As a published poet and arts commentator, Latifa is strongly committed to Maslaha's ethos of employing creative and cross-disciplinary approaches in addressing unmet social needs.
